This lantern is made of grid paper. Its walls are carved with images of dandelions blown apart. Light shining through the cut-outs casts flickering patterns onto the walls of the small chamber in which the lantern is displayed. The paper shade rotates in a circular motion, driven by the heat of the incandescent bulb inside. The work is inspired by harmony lanterns—also known as mawari-dōrō—once used in Buddhist ceremonies to commemorate ancestors. This lantern is titled blue, reflecting its dominant colours.
